The effects of light, the lines contrasts and shadows which it creates, are the main influence on my work.
Recent work has focused on walking through woodland, much of which is pine, a world of solid verticals and delicate horizontals. The paintings are about the essence of woodland not the representation of trees, the way the light changes every detail and form of the woods, creating strong contrasts and variations in colour as it filters through the bare branches of winter and the delicate summer growth. There are always pockets of dark and light, shadows creating passages which lead the eye to something almost, but not quite, hidden. The woods are often silent and ordered, sometimes threatening and chaotic, nature in a state of constant flux.
I work in three mediums, drawing, printmaking and painting, and I apply the process of layering in all three.
