I work in stone, or clay which I then cast into bronze resin. I particularly like carving the softer stones like soapstone or alabaster. There is some chiselling involved in the early stages but mainly the stone is worked by rasping and filing and feeling the contours of the piece develop. The final stages are sanding and polishing. Feeling the stone becomes smoother and seeing the colour intensify is very satisfying.
I also work in clay which, though not as tactile as stone, means I can improvise more and change the piece as it develops. I take my inspiration from nature or what is happening around me in my life at the time.
